Chris Guccione http://www.betshoot.com/images/vs.gif Gael Monfils
OK, so this pick is a little biased because I have to support my fellow Australian in Guccione, but I still think he has a pretty good chance to win this match.
Of course he's not favoured here, as Monfils had a terrific French Open and then beat Guccione in straight sets at Nottingham. But the Nottingham match was actually pretty close and could have gone either way if Guccione had found a way to snatch one of the break points that he had on the serve of Monfils. And at the end of the day, that's what it will come down to - if Guccione can hold his serve comfortably, the pressure will be on Monfils and it might come down to a couple of points deciding the match.
Unfortunately for Guccione, all he really has is a serve - kind of like Wayne Arthurs, an Australian who was always capable of troubling better player on grass. Between the two of them, I've never seen guys who are so weak on groundstrokes - meaning that it's almost a miracle if they put together enough good points when receiving to get a break. Guccione won't have many chances to break here - has to get these sets to a tiebreak and just see if he can steal a couple of points on crucial points.
The concern for Aussie fans is that, well, Guccione just hasn't been playing all that well lately. He has such a big weapon in his serve, and everyone has been expecting him to break through, but it just hasn't happened for him. If there's anywhere he can be dangerous though, it's at Wimbledon, and he should be very tough for Monfils to deal with, particularly since Monfils has a habit of being a bit mentally fragile in the grand slams and he injured his shoulder slightly at Nottingham.
Guccione isn't any kind of safe bet here, but for a guy with such a service weapon at Wimbledon, it's worth a shot to have an extra interest in the outcome (if you're Australian anyway!).
